THE 80's (il testo è decisamente autobiografico...)

I smoke Consulate and Park Drive
Drank Newcy Brown, learned how to skive
Polo mints to hide my breath from my Mum
Did a little weed 'cause it felt like fun
Did a little speed if my friends had some
Nicked Volkswagon badges, I'm a Beastie Boys son
Me so horny, me so young, and I still get my washing done

Auntie Jo died of cancer, God didn't have an answer
Rhythm was a dancer, any room for a chancer
That's me in the corner, thanks Sir
Wore a Troop track suit, British Knights shoes
Kangol hat like L.L. Cools
Before I was having it, having it large
They nicked the B.M.X. from out my garage

And I knew it was Tire from off the estate
'Cause every time I saw him he smiled like we were mates
From then on in, I'd have to walk to me Nan's and I'll dream my dreams for a sea of prams
Like a hooligan on the football stands and I threw the V's to Leeds and West Ham
And then I ran, I ran so far away
Down Scotia Road to a taxi bay
Then I ran again 'cause I couldn't pay
Young Muslim didn't get his fare that day
I apologise today

Things look better when they start
That's how the 80's broke my heart

And who are you calling poof
You like Wham, man
I hate that stuff
And then my Granddad died and left a hole in the family
And lots of women there to nanny me

School was a laugh, they didn't have A.D.D
Thick was the term they used for me
Over and over, repeatedly, over and over
Take my breathe away, pass the bidley bidley bidley bidley bong
Pass it on the left hand side
Right turn, Clyde

That girl in the fourth year got pregnant
She was raised Catholic, brilliant
I cried, she cried, we cried
Her youth died

Drank cider in the cemetery
The year above us had discovered 'E'
And I said it weren't for me
Twelve pounds fifty
I could rob my mum's purse and buy one off Chalky

Met a girl on Monday, drank fizzy pop on Tuesday
Fingered her on Wednesday, and on Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday
Dumped by Sunday

Things look better when they start
That's how the 80's broke my heart
The wonder years I've played my part
That's how the 80's broke my heart

I lost my virginity to a girl called Anne-Marie
Well, she said she fancied me
And then she said "Fuck me" and I thought fuck me
And I'm all talk and it'll be over too quickly

And it was but I couldn't care less
I'd seen a girl's part, made a mess on her dress
Oh yes, you're now rocking with the best
Second person in my year that had seen a breast
I'm in my 30s now and I'm still impressed
Why the Falklands Mum, and what have they done

Where do girls come, where do girls come from, where do girls come from
It's the 80's what you looking at, you mong
So young, so long, so young, so long
Too short, so long
What you looking at, you mong
Too short, so long, too short, so long
So long

TORNIAMO ON TOPIC...

The musician Robbie Williams about his depression, traumatic memories of his Take That times, the addiction to recognition and his new album "Rudebox".

Spiegel: Mr Williams, several lyrics of your new album "Rudebox", that will hit the market next week, are about the same theme: Robbie Williams. Are you your greatest fan?
Williams: Well spotted. But everything I do has to do with me. And before you ask: Yes, the album is therapeutic. Plus it is nostalgic.
SPIEGEL: You mean because the sons remind you of the eighties? A decade that you have experienced as a teenager and that many music critics see as the byword for bad taste.
WILLIAMS: But the one in which I first developed something like an identity. I discovered my love for pop. I was enthusiastic about hip-hop and break dance and found everything great that somehow sounded electric. And I tie my album to the first pregnant memories. It's the first real Robbie Williams album.
SPIEGEL: Isn't this the most boring of all advertising jingles every pop musician says about his work?
WILLIAMS: That might be true for the others but I have never said that before. You may go and search the archives for it, if you don't believe me. With all my previous albums I wanted to please everyone under the sun, impress media people. This album I have really only done for myself.
Spiegel: For whom have you done your previous album "Intensive Care" then? Not for the about six million buyers?
Of course, but also for all who still think I am a pop marionette. A lively pop-doll, that dances and sings when a clever magician pulls the invisible strings in the background.
SPIEGEL: The puppet-player was songwriter Guy Chambers, with whom you have worked together since 1997?
WILLIAMS: Yes. Before intensive care that was the reason why I parted from him. Many critics believed that I had only little influence on the music and lyrics. So they expect that his farewell would be my sure end.
I wanted to prove with "Intensive care", and now also with "Rudebox" that I can record a successful Robbie Williams album without him. I wanted respect from that people that didn't even trust me on tying m own shoelaces. Apart from that I wanted to like myself for once.
SPIEGEL: Isn't it much more difficult to please yourself then it is to please other people?
WILLIAMS: Indeed, that is the most difficult thing. I have loved all my records until some critic punished it with so much hatred that it was hard for me to still like them. I still don't like to listen to some of my old songs anymore. But time heals the wounds and I rediscover even some of my old records.
SPIEGEL: You have sold more then 50 Million records and fill football stadiums around the planet. Isn't that enough to give you self-confidence? Why is it so hard for you to deal with critique?
WILLIAMS: because it is never about my work, about my music. The attacks are always targeted at me personally. I long for objectivity. Is that too much to ask for? I only want my music to be loved - and me myself a bit too of course.
SPIEGEL: Some of your new lyrics read as if they are the result of psychological therapy in which you analyse your time with Take That. Why do you still occupy yourself with that phase?
WILLIAMS: There's a lot of sadness inside of me. Let's call it melancholy. But I am not irreconcilable. On the one hand some of my old mates didn't make it easy for me to like them. On the other hand after every attack of melancholy I'm in a good mood for a while.
SPIEGEL: Do songs really work as therapy against melancholy and depression?
WILLIAMS: No, unfortunate it is not that easy. But if I write about things that have hurt me it does help of course to deal with them. But believe me, sometimes I do feel very miserable.
SPIEGEL: The biography "feel" that came out two years ago reported about your depression. It doesn't seem like you're much better today.
WILLIAMS: Surely. There were times it made me feel down when I just thought about Take That. From one to the other moment I felt horrible. Then I wished I could turn back time and d a few things different in my life. But I'm over that. I know that I feel much better today, that there is a lot less pain I'm feeling then I did some years ago. Maybe that is because I write songs about my problems, maybe that is because I am getting older. Or maybe because my doctor has prescribed me better drugs. Maybe it's a bit of everything.
SPIEGEL: It's hard for you when the critics **** you off. Do you feel underestimated in general?
WILLIAMS: Oh you know I find it better to sell 50 Million records and be underestimated then to sell 1 Million records and be overestimated. Or what do you think? But it's decisive that in both cases you're not happy. It's great to be successful. But it is irritating when you get beaten up by the media in your home - in my case England.
English journalists hate me and everything I do.
SPIEGEL: Isn't that a bit exaggerating?
WILLIAMS: Obviously you don't take me serious either because I don't exaggerate. I read all that nuts!
SPIEGEL: Why do you do that to yourself?
WILLIAMS: Because I am sick. I'm mental. But you also do things that aren't good for you. Don't you eat up a whole bar of chocolate once in a while? Don't you drink a beer too much every now and then?
SPIEGEL: Possible.
WILLIAMS: You see. Then you should understand what's going on with me. Imagine you're sitting in a room alone. And you know that next-door people gossip about you. Don't you listen? Believe me, every ordinary human would press his ear against the wall after a while. I think it's just human to torture yourself with the negative. If you don't care about the gossip about you, you must be the Dalai Lama or any other spiritual super-being. But for me the whole thing is a bit more complicated because it's all public and because I track down the hidden meanness faster then most other people. I pay a lot of money to someone to help me distance from the things that pull me down. Without success!
SPIEGEL: Does it fall under "track down" that you read what's written about you on the Internet?
WILLIAMS: All the time. Another addiction and a grave mistake. Even in the Internet I only find hate. That's why I prefer to be in countries where I don't speak the language. In Germany for example. All the mean things that are published about me, I don't understand them, so I don't care. So Germany is clean for me, just as France and Mexico. I only know that in these countries my shows are full and my records sell. Thanks!
SPIEGEL: What stories do you find about yourself in the Internet?
This morning I read that I have been in the pharmacy of Harrold's. There I have told him that he should get some condoms and diapers. Because I pee into bed and it happens that the girl beside me can't save herself on time.
Spiegel: Does that make you sad or do you laugh when you read such things about yourself?
WILLIAMS: In this case I laughed because it is just too stupid. I was at Harrods twice in my life, but never even close to the pharmacy, just in case there is one, but in the toy section. So just to get this straight: no, Robbie doesn't pee into his bed.
SPIEGEL: At the start of your career you said you envy all the people who are more successful then you. Is that still true?
WILLIAMS: today I know how foolish that was. But of course it's easy to say that when you're very successful. Greed is human and ugly but natural. I wish I was free of that today but I'm still not totally. But at least I am aware about that.
SPIEGEL: What are you jealous about?
WILLIAMS: About good songs.
SPIEGEL: The last good song you have heard?
WILLIAMS: "Angels".
SPIEGEL: That's your own hit.
WILLIAMS: right. I'd rather like to say whom I adore: the U2 singer Bono for example, because it seems he can deal with people very relaxed. But if you insist on an answer: I envy the people whose life is less complicated then mine.
SPIEGEL: A complicated life is a normal consequence of fame.
WILLIAMS: I know. You get used to it and still you're shocked every now and then. If I would go down to the hotel bar now, everyone in the room would stare at me. Even if most people try to do it decently I feel the eyes on me. And that's shocking in time and again.
SPIEGEL: When was the last time you did not get recognised?
WILLIAMS: When I was sitting alone in my room a few minutes ago.
SPIEGEL: Is that why you live in Hollywood since a few years? Because Robbie Williams is by far not as famous there as he id in Europe?
WILLIAMS: I still get stared at in the streets. I believe they think I'm famous somewhere oversees. In Los Angels one remains unimpressed in general. No one wants pictures with me there.
SPIEGEL: Contrary to Europe where there seems to be a photographer in every hotel lobby taking pictures when you come close to a women for more then two seconds. And she sells her alleged sex-adventure to a newspaper.
WILLIAMS: I like sex, also on my tours. As single I even need more sex. At the same time I know that many girls only want to get to bed with me to sell their story thereafter. Or I wasn't in bed with them and they sell some fairy tale. 60 to 70 percent of the Robbie-sex-stories you can read are just fake.
SPIEGEL: Does that annoy you?
WILLIAMS: Yes because I wish I had indeed slept with all these girls. I see the pictures in the newspapers and find most of them really cute. So come here! I must somehow profit from this circus.
SPIEGEL: That doesn't sound like the melancholic Robbie Williams at all.
WILLIAMS: You think I should be more in for romantic love? See, I am not at all interested in falling in love. I'm not looking for a lasting relationship. I'm 32 years old. And I like to be alone. Relationships are hard work and I'm too egoistic for that at the moment.
SPIEGEL: Isn't it more complicated with love? When you fall in love you can't just shake that off can you?
WILLIAMS: I think many people are in love with a romantic idea of love. And I'm in love with the idea of not falling in love. But likely I'm hoping for someone to convince me of the opposite.
SPIEGEL: Might a laid-back womaniser image be a hinder?
WILLIAMS: Might be, but it pays off to have a look behind the scenes. I'm a god guy. I'm funny. And I'm very generous. I know that. The women still come, although I have that image, and some when one will stay - because of my real qualities.
SPIEGEL: More and more successful artists get independent from the big record companies and bring out their music themselves. Does Robbie Williams still need a biog record company?
WILLIAMS: I contract still binds me. But I would like to release my music independently from a record company. Then I could even say I'll never give an interview again.
SPIEGEL: With this attitude Prince also wasn't very successful.
WILLIAMS: I'm totally aware of the risks. I know that without the help of a record company I might sell less and therefore earn less money. But you know what? I really don't care about money. I wouldn't need to work anymore since a long time.
SPIEGEL: what keeps you going then?
WILLIAMS: Only my ego. I do all of that only for myself. But the machinery of the music industry is making me sick more and more. This running wheel takes away my last power and pulls n my nerves incredibly. I pray that I can escape this machinery as soon as possible.
SPIEGEL: Do we understand you correctly: When you record contract expires, you will not sign another one?
WILLIAMS: that's exactly what it means.
SPIEGEL: The maybe you'll have more time for the book you're working on.
WILLIAMS: At the moment the work is resting because I am too lazy. 40 pages are done, 260 are still missing. In school even friends called me "dummy". Or "fatty". Children can be really cruel. But hello! Now the fat dummy writes a book. Why? Because I want to. Really dumb isn't it? And you know what?
SPIEGEL: Please.
WILLIAMS: My book will sell like mad.
SPIEGEL: Mr Williams, thank you very much for this talk.

Voto 6.

Alcuni brani non mi piacciono, tipo Kiss me, Viva life on Mars e Burslem Normal.

Bellissime (valgono il disco) She's Madonna, The 80s, The Actor, We're the pet shop boys, Keep on (very Limp Bizkit sound), Summertime, Lovelight (beat travolgente) e Rudebox.

Molto spiritosa la cover di King of the Bongo, con la vocetta squiilante di Lily Allen ai cori.
Gradevole anche The 90s.

E lo trovo coraggioso e molto intelligente, con vette artistiche considerevoli (She's Madonna su tutte) e a tratti molto intimo (The 80s).

1. It is the best album of Robbie's career. :?
2. It is a very clever album. :)
3. It is also a very funny album. :)
4. It is also a very touching album. :)
5. It is all a bit of a relief really. :)
6. It is a very best album of pop of the years 2006 :?: Direi che Intensive Care certo lo è stato.

Here's what some of the punters on the Popjustice messageboard have been saying about it over the last 24 hours.

"Never been the biggest Robbie fan, but for the first time ever I found one his songs instantly attractive."

"I really am shocked at how good it is."

"It's clear already that it contains some brilliant pop songs."

"This is easily the album of the year and BY FAR the best of Robbie's career."

"I listened to the whole album twice today and think it's the best album he's made in years."

"A few songs take a couple of listens, but this is fresh, catchy, different, witty, sad and very funny and definitely the best album Robbie has ever done. I too don't know why they decided to release 'Rudebox' as the first track - it is the worst single on there."

"I'm pleasantly surprised at this album."

"It's one of the best albums I've heard this year."

"I must admit after Intensive Care, I was well and truly done with Robbie Williams. Then he released Rudebox, which I loved... And now I've just had a listen to the new album, and well, I'm shocked at how good it is. To go from the naffness that was Advertising Space and Sin Sin Sin, and pull this out of the cupboard, is quite amazing. One of the CDs of the year."

"This album is an absolute masterpiece. The 80s and The 90s in particular is fucking outstanding."

You can't argue with popularity. Well, you could...

"My ears have never heard anything as shit as this album."

...but you'd be wrong.

Sono testi a volte molto intimi e decisamente sinceri (The 80/s, The 90’s, Summertime, Burslem Normals), spesso ironici e graffianti (Never touch that switch, Good Doctor, Viva life on mars), a volte anche un po’ cinici (The Actor, Keep on, Dickhead).
Brani da 10 e lode sono: She’s Madonna; The Actor (forse il miglior brano dell’album); We’re the Pet shop boys; Keep on. Sono pezzi da vero fuoriclasse.

Nonostante We’re the Pet shop Boys sia una cover, è stata rivista in maniera davvero accattivante.

Robbie reinvents on new album
October 19, 2006 12:00am

CAMERON Adams checks out Robbie Williams' new album track by track.

There's a music-world cliche that when artists are in their imperial period they could release an album of themselves farting and it'd still make No.1.

Welcome to Robbie Williams' farting album: the experimental album he's made because he can.

Except Rudebox is the most interesting album he's done in six years.

Gone are the anthems ready-made to woo stadiums and keep Robbie's golden goose laying platinum eggs.

Rudebox has moments that may alienate Sharon and Shane Suburbia, yet he's never sounded so creative and musically alive.

Gone are his regular songwriters, replaced by dance and electronic producers, some famous, some not.

There's a handful of covers -- most obscure -- there's no rock, no real ballads and lots of rap.

This is everything a pop star of his status should do, but rarely does; completely reinvent himself and see just how open-minded his fans are.

Intensive Care
Robbie Williams, Rudebox

SOURCE: The Guardian

It is hard to think of a recent release that has incurred quite the level of negative pre-publicity afforded Robbie Williams' seventh album. Coming hard on the heels of a world tour that began with Williams offering refunds to the entire audience at the opening show and ended with the singer apparently announcing his retirement from live performance, Rudebox has been billed as incontrovertible proof that the previously unstoppable Williams juggernaut has developed engine trouble. Here, it has been intimated, is the sound of Robbie Williams' big end going: an album so peculiar, so spectacularly misconceived, that it will decimate his fanbase at a stroke. "What a bizarre, baffling and downright strange record this is," howled one august music magazine.

Article continues

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alas, would that Rudebox were that interesting. There are certainly moments when you wonder what on earth Williams thinks he's up to - not least a cover of world music star Manu Chao's novelty track Bongo Bong/Je Ne T'aime Plus that concludes with Williams doing a terrible impersonation of the French legend he recently namechecked in an interview as Serge Gainsborough - yet, for the most part, it turns out not to be bizarre, baffling or downright strange, but somehow inevitable. On his last album, Intensive Care, Williams' new co-writer Stephen Duffy apparently expunged the singer's desire to record the wretched jokey tracks that had peppered all his previous albums, like a musical equivalent of the tiresome array of gurns and knowing winks he employs onstage. Reviews were better, but in Britain at least, sales were not: the final single from Intensive Care, Sin Sin Sin, was the lowest-charting of Williams' career. The ensuing live dates, meanwhile, suggested that Williams' longing to be taken seriously as an artist and songwriter was precluded by his longing to perform Me And My Shadow à deux with Jonathan Wilkes, former presenter of ITV's You've Been Framed. Don't let Intensive Care fool you, seemed to be the message; I'm not done winking and gurning yet.
And so it proves. Despite a stellar cast list, including the Pet Shop Boys, Lily Allen, New York hip hop DJ Mark Ronson and producer William Orbit, Rudebox is an album that doesn't stop winking and gurning at you for over an hour. It throws a lot of musical styles at the wall: R&B, 80s cover versions and electro among them. But every time one of them looks like sticking, every time it threatens to hit a note of affecting seriousness (the brilliant, icy meditation on fame's corrupting power that is She's Madonna, a cover of New York electro act My Robot Friend's We're the Pet Shop Boys - a glorious homage to the power of music - or The Actor's skewed, slightly disturbing synth-pop) it quickly starts making with the pop-eyes and funny face: "We're mad, innit?" as Williams exclaims at one juncture. This, it scarcely needs saying, proves fantastically irritating, not least because the funny face usually takes the form of a novelty hip-hop track, often featuring the uniquely depressing sound of a white multimillionaire pop star rapping in Jamaican patois. Good Doctor finds Williams doing a terrible north-western approximation of Mike Skinner's vocal delivery. It's the Coronation Streets.

The kind thing to say would be that Rudebox exists in a long tradition of messy, risk-taking records that seem less like coherent albums than a kind of musical miscellany in search of an editor: the Beatles' White Album, Fleetwood Mac's Tusk and the Clash's Sandinsta! among them. But you feel fairly daft implying that Williams' limp cover of Stephen Duffy's 80s pop hit Kiss Me somehow drinks from the same stream of inspiration as Dear Prudence or Somebody Got Murdered, and, in any case, it's hard to think of a song more likely to curb the listener's generosity of spirit than Rudebox's closing "secret" track, Dickhead. A woeful sub-Eminem rant, it features Williams gallantly threatening to set his retinue of bouncers on anyone who dares to criticise his music. By the time it concludes, puzzlingly, with the singer shouting "I've got a bucket of shit! I've got a bucket of shit!", one feels less inclined to say the kind thing than the cruel thing: you don't need to tell me that, pal, I've just spent the last hour examining it.

In truth, Rudebox doesn't deserve such opprobrium. If it's unlikely to confound fans of Captain Beefheart with its edginess and experimental verve, the mind still boggles at what Williams' core audience - the mums, the Heat readers, the couples who buy two CDs a year from Tesco - will make of it. A scant handful of highlights aside, it is packed with half-baked ideas, bad jokes, music that any other star of Williams' stature would be terrified of the general public hearing. Perhaps that's the point. If nothing else, Rudebox is a sharp reminder that Robbie Williams is unique.

Review from the Star Magazine ~ ROBBIE WILLIAMS - RUDEBOX

We've been hearing alot about this record _ how Robbie has gone completely underground; how loyal fans will be outraged; how he's embarassed by,and looking to ditch, his earlier work.

As it turns out, Rudebox is actually rather excellent, and isn't the record label-destroying album of weirdness we has been led to expect.

All the things that people love and hate about Robbie are present and correct, from the cheeky-chappie joking through to the self-love and self-loathing that he seems to ricochet between.

It's in a musical sence that this album really takes off though - Bob goes for the sort of music that HE is into. As a result, the album ranges from stomping electro pop through raucous blues to French pop, and yet somehow stays coherent.

Employing the Pet Shop Boys to produce two tracks - including a superb cover of Human League's Louise - was a stroke of gernius, and it appears the PSB's touch is precisely what he has been searching for.

Robbie's always been far more complicated than either his rabid fans or detractors have acknwledged. Rudebox should go some way to making that clear.

Anger over Robbie "special" lyric
Tuesday, October 24 2006, 03:23 BST - by David Cribb

Robbie Williams has come under fire for offending disabled people with his new album.

The title track on his Rudebox record contains the line "dance like you just won the Special Olympics", with the word "special" omitted from the single release of the song.

The chairwoman of the British Council Of Disabled People Anne Pridmore commented: "I am a big Robbie Williams fan and I went to see him recently, but I will not be buying this album. I find the lyric about the Special Olympics highly offensive and it is rank disablism."

However, Robbie has hit back, with his spokeswoman saying: "He adores sport of any kind and is full of admiration for disabled athletes."

Rudebox diventa doppio platino in Europa

"Aspetta in linea (scrive). Take . . . That . . . Come si scrive patience?"
Dopo una veloce lezione di spelling si sentono a tutto volume le note dei Take That.
Williams stoppa.
Ottimo consiglio.
"The 90's come canzone è probabilmente il mio miglior lavoro.

I Radiohead forse?
Assolutamente no.
Ho un altro album Swing (When you are winning) in uscita.(COMMENTO MIO: MITICO!!!!!
“Stavo guardando"Il Rocky Horror Show" la notte scorsa.
