Michael Jackson's former nanny defends him against new sex abuse allegations in HBO's 'Leaving Neverland'
In a rare public statement, Grace Rwaramba said she never witnessed sex abuse.
By
Chris Francescani

The simmering debate over last weekend's new HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland” could be heating up again.

One of Michael Jackson’s longest-serving employees has come forward to defend the late pop star, saying that in all the years she worked for Jackson she never witnessed, suspected or learned of any sexual abuse of children by the pop star.

In a lengthy statement released to ABC News, Grace Rwaramba – the former nanny to Jackson’s children, Prince Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II (known as ‘Blanket’), who worked for Jackson for 17 years – described her former boss as hopelessly naïve to manipulation and incapable of hurting children.

“If Michael harmed Wade Robson and James Safechuck, they have my deepest sympathy and compassion,” Rwaramba said in the statement, referring to the two men featured in the documentary. “I don’t claim to know what happened between Michael and his accusers. I wasn’t there.”

“However, because Michael is no longer here to defend himself, and because I have a unique view of him and the life he lived, I feel compelled to speak out against what I firmly believe to be false claims. The person that Wade and James describe is not the person that I knew.”

“He was trusting to the point of extreme naivete; always assuming the best intentions in everyone,” Rwaramba said of Jackson in the statement. “While he was far from perfect, in my over twelve years of living with Michael, knowing him and his lifestyle intimately, I never saw or experienced anything that led me to suspect that he was capable of child sexual abuse.”

In the controversial film, the two men graphically detailed alleged child sexual abuse at the hands of Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50. They claimed that Jackson introduced them, separately, to pornography and masturbation and digitally violated them on multiple occasions.

In one of the most talked-about scenes in the documentary, Safechuck pushes a child-sized, diamond-inlaid gold band on to the tip of his adult finger. He contends in the film that Jackson gave him the ring as part of a secret, mock wedding ceremony the two held when Jackson was 30 and Safechuck was 10.

"I was really into jewelry and he would reward me with jewelry for doing sexual acts for him," Safechuck said in the HBO film.

The documentary has sparked a re-examination of Jackson's legacy, more than a decade after the pop singer was acquitted of child sex abuse charges involving a 13-year-old in California -- home to his 'Neverland' ranch.
Since it aired earlier this month, several radio stations in Canada and New Zealand have reportedly stopped playing Jackson's music, and in Manchester, England, a statue of the singer has been removed from the National Football Museum, according to the BBC.

Jackson's estate has sued HBO for $100 million for allegedly breaching a previous, 1992 non-disparagement agreement as part of a contract to air Jackson's "Dangerous" tour. Jackson estate lawyers did not seek to prevent broadcast of the documentary, which aired this month on March 3 and 4, but rather claimed that the previous agreement was breached by airing the "Leaving Neverland" documentary.

“HBO breached its agreement not to disparage Michael Jackson by producing and selling to the public a one-sided marathon of unvetted propaganda ... [in] a film where they knew the two subjects had for many years testified under oath and told family, friends and law enforcement that Mr. Jackson did nothing inappropriate to either of them."

HBO network executives said in a statement issued earlier this week that the lawsuit was an effort to "undermine" the film.

“Despite the desperate lengths taken to undermine the film, our plans remain unchanged," the statement reads. "HBO will move forward with the airing of Leaving Neverland, the two-part documentary, on March 3rd and 4th. This will allow everyone the opportunity to assess the film and the claims in it for themselves.”

Attempts by ABC News to reach Robson and Safechuck for comment on Rwaramba's statements were unsuccessful. A spokesman for the film directed requests for comment to the two men's attorney. The attorney provided ABC News with a statement in response to Rwaramba's comments.

"Ms. Rwaramba admits in her statement that she does not know what happened between Michael and his accusers," attorney Vince Finaldi said in the written statement. "As a longtime employee of MJJ productions she has a vested interest in defending Jackson and his estate."

"It is sad that she had chosen to disparage a victim of child sexual assault and his family in order to do so," Finaldi continued in the statement. "This is a continuation of the campaign of false information, character assassination, victim blaming and shaming that the Jackson corporate lawyers heap on any child or adult who speaks the truth about Mr. Jackson’s sexual behavior with children. These attacks have kept many of Mr. Jackson’s victims silent. It will not stop Wade or James from speaking the truth.”

'60 to 100 employees'

Rwaramba played a pivotal role in Jackson's life for more than a decade before his death. She traveled with Jackson and the children to Bahrain and Ireland following Jackson's 2005 child molestation acquittal. In 2008 she testified in Jackson's defense during a breach-of-contract trial brought against the singer by a Bahranian sheik.

"Grace was like the mother, and Michael was the father," Jackson friend and filmmaker Bryan Michael Stoller told Time Magazine in 2009. "The only person I saw get close to the kids besides Michael was Grace."

The Robsons’ ambition and self-interest knew no bounds.

Rwaramba contended in her statement that there was an "army" of people working at Jackson’s California ranch whenever the iconic artist was there, and that it would have been extremely difficult for the star to molest visiting children.

“I was at Neverland when many of the family friends would come and go," Rwaramba said in the statement. "At any given time, anywhere between 60 to 100 employees worked in security, maintenance, housekeeping, grounds, the kitchen, and many other roles. Maintaining the ranch in such immaculate shape took an entire army of workers that were always around.”

Jackson was first accused of child abuse in 1993 by Jordan Chandler. That accusation led to an extensive law enforcement investigation but no indictment. Jackson reportedly settled a civil lawsuit in 1994 with an undisclosed payment to Chandler's family.

A decade later, Jackson was charged with seven counts of child sexual abuse and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent to commit felony child sex abuse against Gavin Arvizo. In June, 2005, Jackson was acquitted of all charges.

'Every night that I was with him, there was abuse'

In the documentary, the two men -- Robson, now 36, and Safechuck, now 41 – claimed they were each individually abused by the pop star, Robson beginning when he was 7-years-old and Safechuck beginning when he was 10.

"Once the abuse started within that first week, every night that I was with him, there was abuse. While my mother was you know, next door," Robson said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey titled "After Neverland," which directly followed the release of the documentary on HBO.

If Michael harmed Wade Robson and James Safechuck, they have my deepest sympathy and compassion. I don’t claim to know what happened between Michael and his accusers. I wasn’t there.

Safechuck said he first met the pop star while shooting a soda commercial at age 10. He claims that after developing a friendship with Jackson, he was also abused by the singer in secret hideaways throughout Neverland Ranch and in hotel rooms while on tour.

Safechuck also said Jackson would make him participate in "drills" where "he would pretend like somebody was coming in and you had to get dressed as fast as possible without making noise."

When sexual misconduct allegations against Jackson surfaced in 1993, both Robson and Safechuck testified on the singer's behalf, saying he never molested or touched them in appropriately. Robson did again in 2005, prior to Jackson's acquittal on child abuse charges.

But now the two men have come forward to claim that they were, in fact, sexually abused by the singer – and that it took becoming fathers themselves for them to recognize themselves as victims of childhood abuse by the singer.

Robson told Winfrey that when he testified he had “no understanding that what Michael did to me sexually was abuse. I had no concept of it being that.”

“From night one of the abuse, of the sexual stuff that Michael did to me, he told me it was love,” Robson said. “He told me that he loved me and God brought us together. … Anything Michael would say to me was gospel.”

'Ambition and self-interest'

Rwaramba, who acknowledges she doesn’t know whether or not Jackson molested the two men, described Robeson and his mother as determined to use Jackson’s fame and celebrity to make him a star.

“I know Wade Robson and his family well,” Rwaramba said in the statement. “I first met Joy Robson back in the early 90s, when I was at MJJ Productions. In late 1994, I attended the release party of Wade’s first album in California. I distinctly recall Joy running that event as though her life depended on it. After that release party, I didn’t see the Robsons again until early 1997, when Wade joined several other families at Neverland after Prince was born.”

Immagine

Over the years, I got to know the Robsons well as they visited the ranch on many different occasions,” Rwaramba continued in the statement. “Neverland was an enchanting place where the butlers, cooks, maids, zookeepers, gardeners and other staff made every guest feel like royalty, and everyone person who was fortunate to visit loved it!”

“The one thing that was consistent about the Robsons over the years was Joy's steely resolve to turn Wade into a star,” Rwaramba said in the statement. “When all the other kids, often including Michael, were off having water balloon fights or watching a movie in the theater, Joy would be drilling Wade on a dance move and every so often wave Michael over for some tips.”

“On one such occasion, Michael sat next to me as I was watching Prince and we watched Wade practice under Joy’s focused inspection. He said to me, “she reminds me of Joseph,” referring to his father’s obsession with perfection. Unbeknownst to Joy, that was her nickname. Michael had a nickname for everyone. This was the only time I ever heard him compare anyone to his father. Also, despite his complicated past with Joseph, he meant this observation as a compliment.”

Several years after his 2009 death, both men sued the Jackson estate civilly for child sexual abuse, but the lawsuits were dismissed due to statutes of limitations. Both men are appealing the separate decisions, according to the documentary.

In the interview with Winfrey, Robson said he was forced to lie on the witness stand at Jackson's 2005 trial and elsewhere, and that the lawsuit was an effort to do "something good with this bad."

“Michael trained me and forced me to tell the lie for so many years, and particularly on the stand,” he continued. “And those were really traumatizing experiences for me that had a huge impact on the rest of my life. So the feeling was, I want an opportunity to reprocess that experience. I want to get on the stand again, because now I’m able to tell the truth.”

'Neverland' wedding bid

Rwaramba also claimed that Robson sought permission to hold his wedding at Neverland -– in the middle of Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial, for which he was acquitted of all charges.

“The Robsons’ ambition and self-interest knew no bounds,” Rwaramba wrote in her statement. “Several months before Michael was acquitted on all charges on June 13, 2005, he came home from court and informed me that I should expect a call from Wade. When Wade called the ranch, security patched the call through to Paris’s room where Michael and I spent most of our time preparing for the next day.

"I put him on speaker phone," Rwaramaba continued. "He informed me that Michael had advised him to contact me about whether he and his finance, Amanda, could have their wedding at Neverland in the fall. I was utterly shocked by how insensitive the request was; Michael was sitting next to me.

"’You know Grace, Neverland is so special to my family and me,’ Wade continued,” according to Rwaramba’s statement. “’Michael has been like a father to me, and it would mean the world to us if Amanda and I could get married at Neverland.’ I told Wade, this is not a good time, reminding him that Michael was in the middle of the fight for his life.”

(MORE: VIDEO: A look at the final days of Michael Jackson's life)
“A few days later, I was in Santa Barbara running errands when Joy called with the same request. I had previously helped Wade gain permission to film a music video at Neverland, which was a big favor considering the strict no cameras policy. I remember responding with a stern ‘do you seriously expect me to ask Michael, right now -- during the trial -- if you can use the ranch for Wade’s wedding?’

"After a moment of awkward tension, she conceded and dropped off the phone," Rwaramaba wrote in the statement. "Why would someone who alleges to have been assaulted for over seven years want to have one of the most sacred events in his life on the same property where the attacks allegedly took place?’”

(MORE: Joe Jackson, patriarch of musical Jackson family, has died)
A woman who answered the phone at the home of Lynnette Joy Robson declined comment, referring interview requests to a public relations spokesperson in New York, who referred ABC News to Finaldi, Robson and Safechuck's attorney.

“What I can't understand is why Wade would continue to voluntarily and consistently return, and bring friends and loved ones, to a place that is the site of the alleged attacks well into his adult life?” Rwaramba said in the statement.

Rwaramba, a Rwandan national, began working as a personnel director and assistant to Jackson in 1992, and became a nanny to his children beginning in 1997, when Jackson’s first child, Prince, was born.

“For twelve years, from 1997 to 2009, I was part of Michael’s family … I spent more time with Michael in the last twelve years of his life than anyone except his children.”

1 hr. later JS told same crowd he didn't realize he was abused until 2013. Awkward.

Home Movies Oprah Exits a Me Too Documentary about DefJam’s Russell Simmons After Filmmakers...
Oprah Exits a Me Too Documentary about DefJam’s Russell Simmons After Filmmakers Change Course Away from Harvey Weinstein as Subject

by Roger Friedman - January 11, 2020

Oprah Winfrey is certainly in the news right now. It seem she’s been busy advising Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, if reports are correct.

But Oprah is also involved in another surprising scenario. She was listed as executive producer of a documentary about rap music impresario and philanthropist Russell Simmons. The founder of Def Jam Records almost immediately became embroiled in the #MeToo movement after accusations of small time sexual malfeasance and rape. He was the subject of lawsuits as well. Simmons shut down his charity and businesses and moved to Tibet, where’s been posting photos and videos of meditation retreats and so on.

The documentary, by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, is premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25th. But now Oprah has suddenly pulled out of the project, and decided not to include it in her presentations on AppleTV+. The film will still premiere at the festival, but it now lacks Winfrey’s imprint.

Dick and Ziering are highly regarded doc makers. Their “The Hunting Ground” was nominated for lots of awards and was shown on CNN. The pair have issued a statement after Oprah announced she was off the project because it wasn’t ready, in her opinion. The filmmakers told Deadline.com: “Revealing hard truths is never easy, and the women in our documentary are all showing extraordinary strength and courage by raising their voices to address sexual abuse in the music industry. While we are disappointed that Oprah Winfrey is no longer an Executive Producer on the project, we are gratified that Winfrey has unequivocally said she believes and supports the survivors in the film.”

But this isn’t the first time Oprah has caused a major problem for Dick and Ziering on this same film. The doc was originally going to be centered on Harvey Weinstein and how the #MeToo era launched. In October 2017 just two weeks after Weinstein was exposed in the New York Times and the New Yorker, the pair announced they were making the film.

This past December, however, Dick and Ziering announced that their film had changed focus, to the record business and “major figure.” Oprah was suddenly on board. Weinstein was no longer being discussed, as Simmons took his place.

So now there’s no Weinstein film, and Oprah has dealt the filmmakers a significant blow by making a public exit. She’s also declared their film somehow unfit for release, at least under her auspices.

All of this comes a year after Oprah unwisely involved herself in the Michael Jackson documentary, “Leaving Neverland.” After the film– which accused Jackson of child molestation with no evidence other than two young men’s unfounded complaints– Oprah did a live interview with the subjects on HBO. Again, without supporting evidence, she simply decided they were telling the truth.

We’re getting into a strange area here where Oprah makes the call, based on her gut feeling, about which victims have validity and which don’t. Jackson was dead, so it was easy for her to go against him. In the cases of Weinstein and Simmons, she can’t be objective. Weinstein put her in the movie “The Butler,” in which she garnered great reviews. She also got an Oscar campaign and became very friendly with the movie mogul.

In Simmons’ case, he and Oprah are long time friends. Back in December, Simmons took to Instagram to urge Oprah to stop the film once he learned she was involved with it. She obviously took what he said seriously. (See his plea below.)

It’s hoped that Dick and Ziering will find a new distributor or platform at Sundance now that Oprah is gone. Like Winfrey, I’ve known and liked Simmons for years and years. But the accusations against him are serious and must be aired, and discussed. I also hope that these filmmakers, unlike the director of “Leaving Neverland,” have presented all sides of the stories.

Here’s what Simmons wrote to Oprah:

“Dearest OPRAH,you have been a shining light to my family and my community. Contributing so much to my life that I couldn’t list a fraction of it in this blog.Ihave given you the gift of meditation and the groundbreaking book”THE POWER OF NOW “we bonded to say the least. This is why it’s so troubling that you choose me to single out in your recent documentry. I have already admitted to being a playboy more (appropriately titled today “womanizer”) sleeping with and putting myself in more compromising situations than almost any man I know. Not 8 or 14 thousand like Warren Beatty or Wilt Chamberlain, but still an embarrassing number. So many that some could reinterpret or reimagine a different recollection of the same experiences. Please note that ur producers said that this upcoming doc was to focus ONLY on 3 hand chosen women. I have refused to get in the mud with any accusers, but let’s acknowledge what i have shared. I have taken and passed nine 3-hour lie detector tests (taken for my daughters), that these stories have been passed on by CNN, NBC, BUZZFEED, NY POST, NY MAG, AND OTHERS. Now that you have reviewed the facts and you SHOULD have learned what I know; that these stories are UNUSABLE and that “hurt people hurt people”. Today I received a call from an old girlfriend from the early 1980s which means that they are using my words/evidence against me and their COMMITMENT/ (all of the claims are 25 to 40 years old) It is impossible to prove what happened 40 years ago, but in my case proof exists of what didn’t happen, mostly signed letters from their own parents, siblings, roommates, band members, interns, and in the case of 2 of your 3 accusers, their own words in their books. Shocking how many people have misused this important powerful revolution for relevance and money. … In closing, I am guilty of exploiting, supporting, and making the soundtrack for a grossly unequal society, but i have never been violent or forced myself on anyone. Still I am here to help support a necessary shift in power and consciousness. Let us get to work on uplifting humanity and put this moment and old narrative behind us”

If we're going to discuss #MichaelJackson and Safechuck going to Zales, let's keep complete context in tact.
They were walking the mall, Simi Valley Town Center.

Also, the footage is from 'Gift Bazaar' which isn't even a jewelry store.

Stupid tabloid story. Yes MJ told me he was trying to figure out how the jewelry cases were lit and security was suspicious and stopped him. No ring, no Sheryl crow romance, no JS engagement ring either.

‘Leaving Neverland’ & ‘Line Of Duty’ Sales House Kew Media Distribution On The Brink Of Collapse
By Jake Kanter

Jake Kanter
International TV Editor

February 7, 2020 12:54am

EXCLUSIVE: Kew Media Distribution, the British sales arm of the beleaguered Canadian TV group Kew Media, is on the precipice of closure as it stares down the barrel of a winding-up order.

Kew Media Distribution represents high-profile shows including HBO’s Michael Jackson documentary Leaving Neverland, made by Amos Pictures, and World Productions’ hit BBC drama Line Of Duty. But after its parent company ran into trouble last year and was ordered to cease trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange, producers including Amos are fighting to claw back the money they are owed from the international sales of their shows.
Now, in a final attempt to recover cash, film distribution company 101 Films has served Kew Media Distribution with a winding-up petition. Such a move is seen as a last resort and, if successful, will result in Kew Media Distribution being liquidated and its assets being sold off. The legal action will come to a head on March 4, when the High Court will decide whether to approve or dismiss the winding-up petition.

Leaving Neverland Exposes a Culture of Judgement Without Ethics or Law
Apr 4, 2019

Leaving Neverland may be remembered as the biggest example of false allegations in recent history. I would like to believe that we are all advocates for victims of abuse. But what determines who is a victim? Does the mere act of pointing an accusing finger at someone automatically make the accuser a victim? According to our laws, every citizen is innocent until proven guilty. But over the past couple of years, our society has shifted towards ignoring this most precious right. HBO’s Leaving Neverland accuses music legend Michael Jackson of the most-vile criminal acts possible. Creators of the film admit to giving no presumption of innocence. And most journalist have applauded the film while acknowledging that it is blatantly one-sided.
However, the other side of this story has been strong in its defense of the music legend. Jackson’s side is being told by his fans, family and billion-dollar estate. Many have asked, would this film have been made if Michael Jackson were still alive? The answer is no for the following reasons. In 2005, Jackson was accused of similar acts and found not guilty. And both current accusers previously gave testimony under oath saying the crimes they are now alleging never occurred. Therefore, without any evidence proving their claims, Jackson would be able to sue for defamation. Because the movie makes serious criminal allegation without any proof, Jackson would likely win a lawsuit. For these reasons, no one would have made this film if Jackson were here to defend himself.
US law gives more information as to why this film was made. There is no law that protects the deceased from slander. Once someone dies, the most outrageous claims can be made. The dead person’s family or estate have no legal recourse for protecting their memory from slander. HBO and the film’s director Dan Reed sought to exploit this loophole in the law. Despite this loophole, Jacksons estate immediately slammed HBO’s film as “a one-sided character assassination”. In an interview with Variety, director Dan Reed brushed off the criticism by saying, “The estate has no legal argument whatsoever”. Reed’s comments give a lot of insight. Jackson has been dead for almost 10 years. The people behind the film believed they could say whatever they want. Make a blatantly one-sided film accusing the music legend of committing horrendous crimes. Then brag about no threat of legal consequences.
On February 21, 2019 the estate of Michael Jackson filed a $100 million lawsuit against HBO. The suit centers around a non-disparagement agreement the late pop star had with HBO. In 1992, HBO televised his concert “Live from Bucharest”. The contract Jackson had written up includes the following highlights in detailed legal terminology: HBO cannot do anything that would harm or defame the reputation of Michael Jackson, and HBO cannot make any additional show or project about Michael Jackson. If so, HBO would have to check with Jackson, his representatives or his company Optimum Productions. Leaving Neverland’s director admits he did not contact Jackson’s family or his estate. Moreover, the lawsuit makes a very specific point. The pop star’s concert became HBO’s highest rated program. But in the film Leaving Neverland, a claim is made that Jackson was sexually abusing children on that same concert tour. The lawsuit states there could not be a more direct violation of the contract agreement. But would a contract from 1992 still be valid? There is language in the contract that refers to this. It included words like “perpetual”. This means ongoing and unchanging. So even in death, HBO would still have an agreement with Jackson’s representatives and Optimum Productions which remains a company within the estate. Attorney Christine Lepera told Vulture.com, “The suit does have merit because of Jackson’s contract with HBO”.
Moving forward, the lawsuit will give the estate a chance to make two significant accomplishments. One, prove HBO was in violation for making the film. Two, debunk the accusations the film is based on. What would happen if that were to occur? HBO’s film has been a worldwide media campaign intended to ruin Michael Jackson’s legacy. Many have gone on record saying they believe the stories of accusers’ wade Robson and Jimmy Safechuck to be credible. What if these allegations of abuse turn out to be false? The estate appears confident. Perhaps this is due to their history of successfully having Robson and Safechuck’s lawsuits against the estate dismissed. The two accusing men have the same lawyer. Over the past six years the Estate has been successful in having their lawsuits dismissed a total of four times. A judge dismissed Robson’s first lawsuit by ruling, “No reasonable fact-finder could believe Robson’s sworn declaration”.
Unfortunately, people have been falsely accused. And false stories of abuse make it harder for real victims of abuse to be believed. In every situation, searching for the facts is the best way to protect both the accuser and the accused. Sometimes advocates for victims’ rights come across as ignoring facts and the presumption of innocence. Credibility is lost when a social agenda becomes more important than a search for the truth. In conclusion, it is very possible that Jackson’s estate will be successful in their lawsuit against HBO. If so, it will shine a very bright light on this issue. And Leaving Neverland would be remembered as the biggest example of false allegations in recent history.

‘Leaving Neverland’ Distributor Is On the Brink of Financial Collapse
Ashley King February 10, 2020

The distributor behind ‘Leaving Neverland’ has ceased trading amid financial troubles.
Canada’s Kew Media Group withdrew from the Toronto Stock Exchange after a permanent cease trade order. The Ontario Securities Commission issued the order as the production company faces financial troubles. At least one executive has gone on record to say Kew Media is “a sinking ship.”

Producers of ‘Leaving Neverland‘ are affected, with several unpaid royalties for the film. The controversial documentary was distributed globally except for China.

The financial state of Kew Media Group was first revealed in its Q3 2019 earnings report. The media group reported a net loss of over $4.8 million and a 5% dip in revenues from the year prior. The report also disclosed over $79 million in debt. Kew Media Group blamed the rebranding of one of its producers at the time.

In December, Variety revealed the company is looking to sell off assets to pay back its debts. CFO Geoff Webb may have filed inaccurate information regarding the company’s working capital in financial reports.

When that news surfaced, the Ontario Securities Commission issued a temporary cease trade order on January 16th. That CTO had a 15-day window and was made permanent last week.

Kew Media Group must meet all requirements by May 19th to resume trading – or face removal completely.
The company first launched in 2017, the brainchild of Peter Sussman and Steven Silver. Both self-described “content guys” set up Kew Media as a special purpose acquisition company. The media group bought up several Canadian production companies as it splashed onto the scene.

Several of those acquisitions are now looking to extract themselves from the Kew Media fiasco. According to one report, the company’s producers became aware of financial distress during Q2 2019. However, they were not expecting the large-scale damage that Kew Media is currently reporting.

“The share price had tanked before this, and we thought it was a bad quarter. We weren’t imagining this,” one source told Variety.

Experts to discuss impacts of frivolous defamation lawsuits during March 17 Sunshine Week event

In honor of Sunshine Week, a panel of experts will examine the impacts to freedom of information and expression of a rising tide of frivolous but expensive lawsuits against news organizations and other speakers that are seen as aimed at deterring journalism in the public interest.

The moderated conversation, organized by The National Press Club Journalism Institute and the National Press Club's Press Freedom Team, will take place in the National Press Club conference rooms from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2020

As many newsrooms across the United States grapple with dwindling revenues – leading to declining coverage by newspapers, magazines, and news websites – the notable increase in so-called Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation has come at a particularly difficult time for American journalism. These lawsuits are often brought by wealthy, powerful individuals and institutions who may object to news coverage critical of their activities. Plaintiffs who have recently filed SLAPP suits include U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) against McClatchy News, Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax against CBS, and the estate of Michael Jackson against HBO over the documentary 'Leaving Neverland.'

In recent years, state legislatures have responded to the growing prevalence of frivolous defamation lawsuits by passing or strengthening anti-SLAPP laws. And more states like Virginia and Maryland could soon follow suit.

Discussing this rise of frivolous defamation lawsuits, their impact on newsrooms, and the possibility for reforming state laws to provide heightened protections for journalists and other content creators are:

Katie Townsend, legal director at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

Jim McLaughlin, deputy general counsel at The Washington Post

Michael Schaffer, editor of Washingtonian and former editor of the Washington City Paper when it was sued by Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder

Max Mishkin (moderator), associate at Ballard Spahr LLP and First Amendment attorney

Additional speakers may be added.

Impartial filmmakers covering the truth wouldn't need to splice, cut, re-shoot & contrive scenes to create a whole new reality.
This includes Dan cutting MG's speech mid-sentence to omit the context—relating to MJ's privacy being grossly violated by profit-seeking criminals.

CSA victims wouldn't need to exaggerate their claims to impossible heights.
Wade wouldn't claim "100s of times" of abuse when he was only w/ MJ a few times over a decade.
James wouldn't claim abuse at specific locations that didn't exist until long after all "abuse" had ended.

Kew Media Collapsed Owing $13M To Clients Including Netflix & ‘Leaving Neverland’ Producer Amos
By Jake Kanter

May 6, 2020

EXCLUSIVE: Kew Media Distribution’s collapse has left more than 250 of its clients £10.8M ($13.4M) out of pocket, according to a report that lays bare the financial damage of the TV and film sales house’s demise.

Kew Media Distribution’s parent company Kew Media Group went bust in February, but warning lights were flashing well before the crash, as the distribution arm’s clients complained about being owed royalties.

Now, a report by Kew Media Distribution’s administrator FTI Consulting has revealed that the company owed nearly £11M to producers and other clients all over the world, including Netflix and CNN.

The figure is a combination of claims made by partners and Kew Media Distribution records, but FTI said the final total is likely to be higher, given the distributor did not share complete sales reports with all clients.

FTI added that it does not expect producers to recover this money in any meaningful way — even after it has completed a sale of Kew Media Distribution’s library.

The report reveals that Leaving Neverland producer Amos Pictures is among Kew Media Distribution’s biggest creditors. The company is owed nearly £523,000 in royalties after Kew Media Distribution sold its HBO/Channel 4 film on Michael Jackson internationally.

Amos founder Dan Reed terminated his Leaving Neverland distribution deal with Kew Media Distribution, but FTI is not acknowledging the termination and is including the title in its sale of the library. Reed told Deadline he is prepared to take legal action to protect his rights.

Other notable creditors include World Productions, which used Kew Media Distribution to sell its hit BBC One drama Line Of Duty internationally. The ITV Studios-owned company is owed nearly £66,000.

CNN (£399,000), Netflix (£79,000), BBC Studios (£90,000), Idris Elba’s Green Door Pictures (£36,000), Studio Canal (£17,000), Nick Broomfield’s Lafayette Films (£16,000) and Ecosse Films (£8,000) are also among those owed money.

FTI said a sale of the Kew Media Distribution library is in the advanced stages and it is in exclusive negotiations with one buyer. It received initial expressions of interest from 38 companies, including private equity and film and TV distribution firms. “It is not certain that a successful sale will be completed,” FTI warned.
