Sophia Loren was a Michael Jackson's friend.
(Rome, June 27) '' I couldn't believe it when I heard on the radio this morning that Michael was dead. Then when I realized it was true, I burst into tears: for me that child was like a son, we all loved him, me and my children. My family and I are deeply sorry for this serious loss, Michael was one of us, one of the family.
I still remember when I lived in America with my children, we often went to visit him because our ranch was not far from his, he was happy, he loved being with my children and my children loved being with him, Michael always kept a childish attitude even growing up, he didn't like being with adults, he felt uncomfortable.
He is a very delicate person, a little shy and didn't talk much, he always made a great tenderness, he was like a son to me! " - Sophia Loren

Spike Lee is to have an exhibition part at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

During a private visit, Spike Lee looked at his career on display: “This is my pantheon”.

Visitors will be able to trace Lee’s career through props and memorabilia dating back to his 1983 award-winning student film “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads,” moving through his features (“Malcolm X,” “Do the Right Thing,” “School Daze,” “Jungle Fever,” “Bamboozled” and his most recent, “Da 5 Bloods”), documentaries (“4 Little Girls”) and his two Oscars — one honorary and one for his adapted screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman”).

“I’m elated,” said Lee. “I’m happy and honored that this exhibition is here for the opening of the museum.”

The installation is filled with rare posters, film stills and lobby cards signed to Lee by a who’s who of elite directors, including Akira Kurosawa, Billy Wilder, Jean-Luc Godard, Lina Wertmüller, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. There’s an original Playbill from the 1943-44 Broadway production of “Othello” signed by its star, Paul Robeson, the first Black actor to play the role in a major production, and an original poster from the 1959 film version of “Porgy and Bess” signed by stars Sidney Poitier and Brock Peters.

The items from his extensive personal collection had been previously housed at his production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, in Brooklyn.

Said Lee, “This is really a very, very small part of all the stuff I have. I could fill the Brooklyn Museum. I’ve always been a collector. This is a real life’s work. People come to my office, and they say, ‘This is a museum.’ This is my pantheon.”

Also on display, a gold guitar gifted by Prince,

who had contributed several songs for Lee’s 1996 film “Girl 6.”

“I asked Prince for a guitar, and it showed up a year later,” said Lee. “He didn’t tell me it was coming — it just showed up. I said, ‘You gonna sign it for me?’ and he said, ‘Spike, you’re lucky you got the guitar!’”

He burst out laughing: “We had it like that, you know? We were good.”

However, Spike Lee was less than pleased to see that the exhibition does not include anything related to his work with Michael Jackson or for his Estate such as “They Don’t Care About Us”, “BAD25” and “Michael Jackson: From Motown to Off The Wall”.

“MJ should be up there!” said Lee. “You gotta have Michael in here. I know they’re going to rotate stuff, but Michael Jackson can’t be coming off the bench. He’s gotta be in the game when the horn blows!”

And Spike Lee is right to not be happy about it as he is planning more MJ related documentaries in conjunction with the Michael Jackson Estate. Hopefuly the rotation of items will see MJ on the Wall!

"I met Michael through a mutual friend, David Guest, who was working with my then husband, Burt Bacharach. David later married Liza Minelli and I don't know what happened to him today.
He had a gift for connecting people. He introduced me to Michael.
I don't remember exactly where we first met, but I had written
"It's The Falling in Love" for my record company and I think Michael and Quincy Jones had heard it and liked it. I was very surprised when they said they were going to put it on the Off The Wall album. I was really happy." #CaroleBayerSager

.He was a very, very funny man. A real prankster
who even laughed at himself. I remember I was at the Hilton Hotel
in California doing some work for him.
I don't remember now what the project was. Michael was on Sunset Boulevard in a recording studio. He called me and it was around 11 pm, and he said..."Did you manage to finish our project ?"
And I said, "yes, I'm done."
“Come here to the studio!.”
So I went there and when I walked in the front door, he picked me up and we went to a little warehouse, and he said...“David…someone is mad at me”.
And I asked, “What happened? ”
There was Slash and Jimmy Jam and all those great musicians. And Michael made them all play a hundred times! These guys weren't used to recording the same song more than once and Michael kept them in the studio until 5am!
I had a big portfolio, a kind of folder with all my drawings. And after we had seen and had pizza, I went back to the hotel.
Returning to the hotel, I noticed that my briefcase was too heavy, I opened the briefcase, and it was like 10 kilos of gum cascading down. First of all, I didn't see him putting it there and secondly, who had hundreds or thousands of pieces of gum?
I wonder where he got them…'' ( lol )

Prince Azim, the son of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, died on October 24 in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. He was just 38. According to an Instagram post from younger brother Prince Abdul Mateen, he died of multiple organ failure, after being diagnosed with systemic vasculitis earlier this year. “At the same time, he was also coping with bipolar disorder which made the fight harder,” added Prince Mateen.
The prince was known for his close relationship with Michael and Janet Jackson. Add Naomi Campbell, Joan Collins, Pamela Anderson, Mariah Carey and Elizabeth Hurley, and you have a contact list that reads like a Hollywood VIP event. He was particularly good friends with Michael Jackson – a relationship that extended to his father, who paid US$17 million to have Michael Jackson perform at his 50th birthday party back in 1996.
"Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah's son Prince Haji 'Abdul' Azim passed away on 7th of Rabi-ul-awal (Oct 24) at 10.08am local time. The funeral will take place during Asr muslims prayers (late noon) this evening," said the announcement. The cause of his death was not stated.
Funeral or jenazah prayers were recited for the late prince at Istana Nurul Iman before his body was taken for burial at the Royal Mausoleum in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial audiobook was released by MCA on November 15, 1982. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is an audiobook and soundtrack companion album for the 1982 blockbuster film of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg. Composed by John Williams, the album was narrated by recording artist #MichaelJackson, produced by composer Quincy Jones and distributed by MCA Records. The production of the audiobook had John Williams and Michael Jackson working with Rod Temperton, Freddy DeMann, and Bruce Swedien.
The same month, Michael Jackson's acclaimed sixth studio album Thriller despite conditions given by Epic Records, Jackson's record label, that it should not be released until after Thriller. As a result, Epic took legal action against MCA which forced the album's withdrawal. During its curtailed release, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial reached number 37 on the Billboard 200 and number 82 on the UK Albums Chart. It was well-received critically and won Michael Jackson a Grammy Award for Best Recording for Children.

While #MichaelJackson was recording his album Thriller , film director Steven Spielberg invited Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson to contribute a song to the storybook for the film ET The Extraterrestrial . The label Epic Records allowed Michael to record the album for MCA Records under two conditions:
ET The Extraterrestrial could not be released until after Christmas 1982 to avoid a competition with the Thriller album .
ET The Extraterrestrial received the Grammy for Best Recording for Children in 1984 and Michael Jackson said it was "the best Grammy he's ever won".

African musical group Ladysmith Black Mambazo thrilled #MichaelJackson and cast of the film ''Moonwalker'' interpreting the song The Moon is Dancing in the credits of the movie Moonwalker.
Colin Chilvers, the director of the Smooth Criminal segment , spoke about this moment... ''Michael Jackson was absolutely freaked out by these singers after the two of us attended a Paul Simon concert. During the recording of Smooth Criminal, Michael came up with the idea of calling them onto the set without notifying the crew. Everyone was thrilled with the group's performance, as was Michael, who began to cry. It was a totally improvised and magical moment.''

Polo G Pays Homage to Michael Jackson in ‘Bad Man (Smooth Criminal)’ Video
“We hope we have contributed our small part to the everlasting memory and legend of the greatest entertainer of all time,” rapper says

By ALTHEA LEGASPI

https://youtu.be/gxXCfSN3YYY

Polo G has dropped the video for new song “Bad Man (Smooth Criminal).” The track interpolates the 1988 Michael Jackson classic both musically and with the lyrics, while giving his own spin on the bloodstained gangster-themed anthem.

In the Arrad-directed clip, Polo G appears in a swanky white suit with his associates at a casino, where the rapper gambles, takes the stage, and ultimately gets in a row with a rival group. A Michael Jackson impersonator also makes an appearance.

“He was bangin’ wrong ’til they found him deceased/It’s a whole lot of evil roamin’ round in the streets,” he raps on the chorus. “So, so you better look both ways, make your soul shake/Demons standin’ in the doorway/Tell me Annie, are you OK?”

The homage to the King of Pop was cleared by the estate, per a note Polo G shares at the end of the clip addressed to the family, friends, fans of Michael Jackson and his estate thanking them.

“We are truly grateful for all your support in the release of this song and music and video,” Polo G writes. “MJ is loved all around the world. We used this opportunity to represent this song for the future. We thank you sincerely and we hope we have contributed our small part to the everlasting memory and legend of the greatest entertainer of all time.”

“Bad Man (Smooth Criminal)” appears on Polo G’s upcoming 2.0 deluxe edition of his 2021 LP Hall of Fame.

He Made Michael Jackson, Britney Shimmer
Michael Bush, a part-time desert resident and Palm Springs Walk of Stars honoree, shares insider stories about designing for Britney and pajama parties with Michael Jackson.
JEREMY KINSERNOVEMBER 20, 2021

If you’re wondering how an agricultural student from rural Ohio lands in Los Angeles and becomes a costume designer for such celestial figures as Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Britney Spears, well, it’s a circuitous story. Michael Bush dropped out of The Ohio State University to move to Las Vegas where he worked his way around town as a bartender and blackjack dealer before moving further west to Los Angeles. There he met his late partner, Dennis Tompkins, and joined him to work as a costume designer on TV series such as General Hospital. During a hiatus, the twosome got a call from Disney to work on what they believed was an industrial film, only to learn it was Jackson’s 3D opus Captain EO.

Bush and Jackson clicked so strongly that they began a professional partnership and friendship that endured 25 years. Bush chronicled their work which included many of the entertainer’s most famous costumes in his gorgeous 2013 book, The King of Style: Dressing Michael Jackson. In 2012, many of Bush’s creations worn by Jackson were sold in a record-breaking auction at Julien’s Auctions. On Nov. 9, Bush, a part-time desert resident, received a coveted star of his own on the Walk of the Stars in Palm Springs.

The designer chatted with Palm Springs Life about his work with iconic entertainers and what it means to receive local recognition for his work.

How did you first come to work with Michael Jackson?

We (Bush and Tompkins) were on summer hiatus (from General Hospital) and got a call from Disney to work on an industrial film, which was Michael Jackson's Captain EO, a 3D film attraction at the Disneyland Resort. We made the costumes and met Michael. They asked me to dress him. I was the onset dresser. And then from that, all of a sudden 25 years later I was still working with Michael. And Michael is one of those artists that could really inspire you to do things you didn't know you could do.

What qualities about you appealed to him and made him want to work with you?

I think I had a great ability to make him laugh. He was just one of those inspirational artists that was really looking for a friend and someone that would keep his personal life private. Michael wanted to challenge everybody with their ability and to do things that hadn't been done before. Michael's attitude with me was “have no fear.” He wanted to set trends. He had an “I want the world to copy me” mentality versus being dressed by the conglomerate fashion houses. He wanted one-of-a-kind show clothes.

Were any costumes too outlandish or sparkly for him?

Oh, no. The only thing off limits was fringe, because fringe was too distracting when he danced. Most of Michael's clothes were pretty tight because of his body movement. He said, “I'm not a fashion model, I'm a dancer.” The costumes had to show this. I got to watch him rehearse, just me and him, so I could watch his body movements and decide where to put the shiny buckles and the zippers. Michael taught me the human eye could see a flicker of a flame miles away and your brain is programmed for the eye to find the light. Michael wanted the guy in the last row to see what he was doing.

What was his casual wear like around the house?

It was just like everybody else’s. Michael loved pajamas. Sometimes at the studio we had pajama day. Michael did not wear his “Billie Jean” glove or his military uniforms at home. Michael was like everybody else. He was just this outrageous visual artist that when it came to showtime, it was over the top. At home, Michael was just corduroy shirts, black penny loafers, an average guy, but when it came to showtime, there were no limits.
Congratulations on getting honored by the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. What does this mean to you?

It's an honor because I got to live through the celebration and see it. It's not happening after I'm gone. I relish in the moment of seeing it on the street. It's there forever.

You live part-time in Palm Springs. What are some of your favorite places to hang out in the desert?

Revivals, the thrift shop, is fabulous to me to go through. Kaiser Grille is one of my favorite restaurants. I like to sit at the bar and watch people walking down Palm Canyon. You can go into a restaurant and get the Frank Sinatra table. It's all ages now. Thirty years ago, it was more like the retirement center of California and now you've got people out at night with kids in baby strollers.

#StoryOfTheDay...Sir Paul McCartney has said he is not surprised that #MichaelJackson didn't leave him the rights to the Beatles' back catalogue, saying he didn't believe "for a second" that this would happen. Despite rumours that Jackson planned to bequeath his share of Sony/ATV publishing to McCartney, it was revealed last week that there was no such instruction in the will.
"Some time ago, the media came up with the idea that Michael Jackson was going to leave his share in the Beatles' songs to me in his will," McCartney wrote on his website. "[It] was completely made up."
That "idea" was first reported by the Mirror in January. Michael Jackson, their source alleged, had decided to build bridges with McCartney by drawing up a new will that left him his share of the Beatles' back catalogue. But after Michael Jackson's death on 25 June, there was no sign of this will – and the singer's assets were all left to a trust.
"The report is that I am devastated to find that he didn't leave the songs to me," McCartney wrote. "This is completely untrue. I had not thought for one minute that the original report [about the will] was true, and therefore the report that I'm devastated is also totally false."
In fact, Michael Jackson may scarcely have had any of the Beatles' back catalogue left. The Quietus reports that earlier this year, Jackson sold all but 5% of his remaining 25% share in Sony/ATV – in an attempt to improve his financial situation.
Michael Jackson acquired the rights to the Lennon/McCartney song catalogue in 1985, outbidding Paul McCartney in the purchase of ATV Music. ATV later merged with Sony's publishing division, shares of which were considered some of Michael Jackson's most valuable property. Though Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney had collaborated on songs like The Girl is Mine and Say Say Say, the ATV purchase permanently soured their relationship.
Paul McCartney often complained of "having to pay" every time he performed songs such as Hey Jude, but his resentment has faded with time. "I got off that years ago," he told Halifax's Q104 radio station last Thursday. It was something for a while I was very keen on and you can see why, naturally ... [but these] sort of things can eat you up."
After Michael Jackson's death, Paul McCartney described the singer as a "massively talented boy-man with a gentle soul". "I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael," he said.

Re: Random mentions concerning Michael

One day a #MichaelJackson's bodyguard stated this..."During his stay in New York, we were chased by fans, from place to place, all day. Wherever we went, they were already there and I soon felt somewhat frustrated with these young people. So, I thought about what I could do to make it easier for us and came up with an excellent plan, in my opinion.
When we went to the next meeting, I made arrangements with the driver to go undetected to the back door of the building. This way, we wouldn't have to go out in the crowd, waiting, and I was sure this was something Michael would be happy about, because I believed he was getting tired of all the commotion too.
Then, when the time came, I picked him up from his date, we snuck through corridors and staff entrances, towards the waiting car. We managed to get out of the building without being seen by a single fan and I felt really big and proud of myself.
Suddenly, Michael asked me, "Mike, are all the fans gone?" And I proudly said to him, “No, sir! I brought you out the back of the building, to avoid the crowd. ”
But he continued, "But why did you do that?", and I replied, "Well, I thought they were bothering you." But what he said to me, then, really made me think:
“Mike, these people are my fans! They buy my records, they come to my shows and I really love them! You should never, never, never try to sneak up behind them, because I appreciate my fans and if that means that I'm bothering you, know that is OK with me. They are the only ones who care about me, buy my music and support me and I wouldn't be here today, without my fans ! ”
I must confess that it was not the kind of reaction I had in mind, when I had made my plan to get him out of the building. However, this was kind of my “pinch me” moment and I started to understand what he meant when it comes to appreciation and tolerance and that it doesn't matter what social status , nationality or what race you are. ”

Sadly, Jacqueline Avant, the 81-year-old wife of music industry legend Clarence Avant and mother of Nicole Avant, was shot and killed early Wednesday by an intruder at her home in Beverly Hills.
At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook said investigators are continuing to comb the scene for clues, and asked for the public’s help in apprehending the killer, who remains at large.
“Crime of any type will not be tolerated in our city,” Stainbrook said. “We will not rest until the suspect or suspects in this case are brought to justice.”
Jacqueline Avant was known for her philanthropic work, including serving on the board of directors of UCLA’s International Student Center and as president of the Neighbors of Watts. The Avants’ daughter, Nicole Avant, is a Democratic fundraiser and a former ambassador, as well as the wife of Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. She produced a popular Netflix documentary about her father, “The Black Godfather,” in 2019.
The Avants also have a son, Alexander Du Bois Avant, who was featured in “The Black Godfather.” Clarence Avant was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October, where he was feted on video by such figures as Barack Obama and Kamala Harris.

The Former VH-EBA and the Michael Jackson Connection
by David Rowland
Our first big charter was the Michael Jackson Victory Tour, which started on July 6, 1984 in Kansas City, Kansas and concluded on December 9. Although the Jacksons used road and rail for some sectors of the tour, Airmark did all the flying with the 707. There were usually no more than 10 passengers on the aircraft.
During the course of the Victory Tour, N138TA was flown to Tramco at Everett, Washington for maintenance, arriving on August 10. The aircraft re-emerged on August 20 under the new registration N220AM.
While we were on the Victory Tour at Vancouver, two teenagers actually "broke into" the aircraft while it was parked on the ramp. I don't remember the handler or FBO we used at Vancouver, but they noticed an over wing exit open at night and called the police, who caught the kids. The police did a thorough search including a bomb dog walk through. They did not vandalize the aircraft, as they were only interested in seeing Michael Jackson's plane. I met with the father of one of the teens who was very upset and concerned that we would press charges, which we did not. We also alerted Bill Bray, the chief of Michael Jackson's security. They thought it was funny and actually gave the kids free passes.

A fun and nauseating ride in Neverland Amusement Park…
Michael insisted that we make at least one other visit to the park [of Neverland]. I confess that my seasickness history made me reluctant. Her favorite toy was the Zipper — that toy you just look at makes you nauseous, I know that all too well so Zipper was out of the question.
I chose the quietest toy possible: Dumbo — that little elephant with the big ears. I have big ears and as a kid I used to be called Dumbo so it seemed fitting…
Michael got into the car in front of me. We were all settled until the toy gained speed… Dumbo started to spin, spin and spin madly. Of course I quickly got sick.
"Michael, stop it!" I am gonna puke."
…and Michael, laughed a lot!
"You'll be fine. You'll be fine."
He said.
But not. I was not well. Not good!
"It is not funny. This is not funny! I want to get out of this c#*#@.”
Michael hated cursing, but I didn't care. He saw that I was serious and gestured for the operator to stop the ride. After I went downstairs, I had to sit down for a few minutes before we went anywhere else.
And he continued to laugh. How he laughed, amused himself with my defeat!" -by Neil Ratner, writer

Saudi Prince Al-Waleed Conjoined #MichaelJackson in Multimedia. The fortune of the first is estimated at 10 billion dollars, while the second weighs nearly 5 billion dollars.
During a press conference organized yesterday in Paris, the Saudi prince Al-Waleed and the "king of pop music", Michael Jackson, announced, yesterday, the creation of a joint company called "Kingdom Entertainment". Without specifying the amount of their investment, the two partners indicated that the future company will be active in the field of theme parks, hotels, cinema and television programs and multimedia...
"Since the beginning of my career, I have been interested in media and culture. With God's help, my previous investments [Editor's note: Euro Disney, Mediaset...] have been very successful. I hope we will achieve similar goals with Kingdom Entertainment," said Prince Al-Waleed, standing next to a Michael Jackson in a bright red pinstripe jacket, while repeatedly stressing his commitment to "traditional family values. According to Dr. Khalid Al-Mansour, an advisor to the prince, the organizational chart of the new company will be made public "in the coming weeks" and will have offices in the United States, Europe and Asia.
At the age of 37, Michael Jackson is at the head of his Michael Jackson Enterprises empire, which includes the ATV publishing catalog, which holds almost all of the Beatles' repertoire. Last November, the American singer sold the rights to some 4,000 titles in his catalog to Sony Music, creating the joint company ATV Music Publishing, capitalized at 500 million dollars, which now holds the third largest catalog of music rights in the world, after Warner Chappell and EMI. In addition to his interests in Euro Disney and Mediaset, King Fahd's nephew controls the United Saudi Commercial Bank in Saudi Arabia, 25% of the Four Seasons hotel chain in Canada, 10% of Citibank and 11% of Sachs Fifth Avenue in the US. He is also part of the investor consortium led by Canadian developer Paul Reichmann that took over the London Canary Wharf complex last October.
The new company "will defend family values and cultural diversity, in no case will we promote decadence and immorality," said Dr. Al-Mansour, while stressing that it could open its capital to other investors, including Asian groups.

#MichaelJackson handwritten lyrics for the song "The Innocent Man." This unreleased song was written by Jackson in 1993, at the height of the Jordan Chandler allegations. Michael Jackson's drafts were found in his possession a year after his death.
California’s lost her love for me.
Seems she’s trying to convict me now.
Seems her heart has turned against me now.
If I sail to Acapulco or Cancun Mexico
then the odds are all against me,
but god knows that I’m innocent.
If I sail to Acapulco or Cancun Mexico
there the law is waiting for me
and God knows that I’m innocent.
If they won’t take me in Cairo
then Lord knows where will I go.
I’ll die a man without a country
and only God knew I was innocent now.
If I sail to Acapulco or Cancun Mexico
there the law is waiting for me
but God knows that I’m innocent.
If the British try to find me then
lord where will I go?
let the whole world go against me,
long as God knows
I’m an innocent man now.
Farewell to all my years in Hollywood
Or Farewell to all my dreams in Hollywood
Let the whole world be against me
long as God knows I’m an innocent man.
Now if the British try to find me
then lord knows where will I go ?
Let the whole world try to find me
long as God knows.
Sometimes I feel just like a fugitive
I’m running for my life and deep inside I ask the question why
But I’m not running at all
I’m just healing a lonely wounded heart
The truth becomes the lie I wish I could fly away.

“It’s literally like living in a disco ball here,” says fashion designer Michael Schmidt during a video call from the new exhibit that he’s put together spotlighting iconic fashion items worn by mega-stars and all featuring Swarovski crystals. Taking sparkling and dazzling to new heights, the exhibition of embellished costumes opened in November at Swarovski’s Kristallwelten — that’s Crystal Worlds in English — a park and museum, opened in 1995, that’s located near the jewelry company’s headquarters in Wattens, Austria.

Most items in the exhibit, titled The Art of Performance, are original pieces, including one of Michael Jackson’s famed gloves. “To me this is the greatest piece of pop memorabilia in history, so I’m thrilled to have this here. This is an original. It’s on loan from Michael Bush, who was Michael Jackson’s designer. He made all of Michael Jackson’s clothes for the second half of his life,” says Schmidt.

#MichaelJackson by Bill Robles... 'I'm up at 5:30AM, ready to leave the hotel at 7. I arrive at Camp Jackson to drop off my case-- a legal case on wheels, with a handle-- at the media tent. After breakfast, I go to the courtroom and sit in the front row seat designated by the Superior Court of Santa Maria, California, right by the jurors. Jackson pops in at 8:20 to 8:28AM and the judge begins at 8:30, to the minute. I look at the defendant, his accusers, and their attorneys. I check out what the accused is wearing, to get the colors right, and note any crest or medallion and the buttons on his vest. I'm Bill Robles, one of three courtroom sketch artists at the Michael Jackson trial.
Judge Rodney Melville runs a tight court, with three 10-minute breaks, but no lunch. It's called the Melville diet. I make one or two drawings with marker and color wash during the first session from 8:30- 9:45AM, add final touches at the break and run it outside, the vellum flapping in the wind until I tack it to a piece of foam core.
We have an easel set up, with a 23 x 23 piece of white masonite, where TV crews and still photographers line up to shoot my work for television and print. At the arraignment and on the first day of jury selection, twenty-eight TV stations and news outlets queued up. In this day of digital this and digital that, they still depend on me, my $20 drawing pad, pen and markers in my hand, to come up with the images sent on the satellite around the world to millions.
I work pretty fast after so many years, it's so natural. I have more drawings ready for the second break at 11:30 AM, and the final at 1:15PM. The judge has a nice humor, but he's by the book and moves it along. I anticipate what Judge Melville will say: Ask your next question, he instructs the lawyers.
By the time court adjourns at 2:30PM, as promptly as it began, I've drawn 6-8 sketches. One of each witness who takes the stand, a Jackson, the judge and the attorneys. Lawyers tend to have certain positions. Defense attorney Tom Mesereau leans on one elbow; prosecutor Thomas Sneddon puts both hands on the podium or stands with his arms crossed. You wait for certain gestures to make the drawing interesting; action makes it more dramatic.
Two of the courtroom artists take turns sitting in the front row seat. From the first seat you see more. When there are three artists, one alternates to the courts overflow room with a monitor with a closed-circuit camera, but it's hard to see any detail.
The worst part of my job is the piracy of my art, when it gets broadcast without my knowledge or permission. The best part of my job is the excitement of working on deadline in the center of this exciting trial. You can execute your art in any way you want, and if the results are there, you are respected by your colleagues in the media. You know the requirements, to fit the format of the tv screen, and you've got to keep it simple and clear. I try to keep it as it looks, within a vignette format, where the drawing kind of floats, losing the edges. I use brighter colors around the face to add a little more kick. Michael Jackson is so tall and thin. He was looking green last week, so I used a little extra blue and green. With his gaunt cheekbones, from my side view, his hair covers most of his face, unless he turns his head. Sometimes I've only put a nose, and chin and a little jaw showing.
I work pretty feverishly to get my art ready before the break, adding the final touches, doing the blending with my hands and fingers instead of using my marker airbrush. My hands are filthy from smudging the permanent marker on vellum, and I try to clean up when I can with soap and paper towel. Because I have so much to do during the short 10-minute break, I limit my coffee intake, and I don't drink water all day, except with my morning vitamin; anyone who leaves the court except during the three scheduled bathroom breaks, is not allowed to return until court is in recess.
Michael Jackson, a worldwide figure, seems very gentle and humble. At one point he approached me in court during jury selection to ask for one of my business cards, which has his image on it, by the way. It was incredible; when I showed him a drawing of himself with his attorneys, he lit up like a Christmas tree; usually it's the lawyers who ask.
While court is in session, I listen to the evidence, I look at the fascinating faces. I'm not allowed to draw the jurors, who glance at me a bit, but usually everyone is transfixed by what is going on in court.
Everybody's exhausted at the end of the day. By the time you completely wrap up, it's 3:30 or 4PM.
When I look back at all the time I've spent in court, I know I've had a role in something big; I think about the circumstances that brought me together with the person that I read about. History put me into the hub of things." - Bill Robles

''The Thriller video was a long, secret job. I remember we had to sign a non-disclosure agreement and not tell anyone what we were filming. To no one! Not for our family.
My favorite memory of Michael was when I was having lunch and he came over and sat at our table to talk to someone else. It was just a part of the crew and usually they were apart — in fact, they told us at the beginning of filming, 'If you talk to Michael directly, you're fired.'
So he sat down next to us and we were surprised, 'Oh God' and Michael started talking to us and said, 'Does anyone want to finish this sandwich..?' and I said, 'I'll finish!'
So he gave me half his sandwich and I took a few bites and after he left one of the guys said, 'Why did you take it?' I said, 'Actually, I just want to be able to say that in the '80s, I ate half a Michael Jackson sandwich.' Michael didn't eat meat, but he loved fried food.''
