Venice: Michael Jackson Estate, John Landis Unveil ‘Thriller’ Video in 3-D

VENICE, Italy – The hotly anticipated 3-D version of the 1983 game-changing “Thriller” short directed by John Landis world-premiered Monday at the Venice Film Festival, where Landis and Michael Jackson estate co-executor John Branca called it a preamble to bigger announcements regarding upcoming Jackson legacy projects.

“Now we have ‘Thriller’ 3-D, and two more announcements are coming up in the next couple of weeks,” Branca said in an interview with Variety, declining to elaborate further. “Michael had an expression: ‘The quality goes in before the name goes on.’ So we are not ready to announce them yet.”

Asked if there may be an album coming of unreleased recordings from the vaults, Branca said: “I don’t foresee us releasing any more unreleased music for quite some time.” But he added: “That doesn’t mean there won’t be interesting [new] record releases in the very near future.”

Landis recalled that one of the most surreal things about making the zombie-ridden “Thriller” video was Jackson’s friends.

“He introduced me to Spanky Mc Farland [of “The Little Rascals”] and to Marlon Brando,” Landis said. He went on to recount the most surprising encounter he made on the “Thriller” shoot.

“We were shooting the cemetery scene in a meat-packing plant in a bad part of L.A….Mike asked to see me, so I stepped up to his Winnebago. I knocked, and he said: ‘John, do you know Mrs. Onassis?’ I was, like, what? It was just the last person I expected!”

Landis said at first he thought the new 3-D conversion would be merely a gimmick, and was keen about the project primarily because it would allow the negative to be restored. But in the process of doing the conversion, he realized that 3-D “really enhances it, especially the dance” aspect of the video. The short has not been re-edited or re-cut, but the sound has been enhanced.

How and when the 3-D “Thriller” short will be released is still being kept under wraps. However, Landis assured that it would be a “cinematic experience.”

The original 14-minute short redefined the traditional music video when it opened at the Avco Theatre in Los Angeles in 1983 for a sold-out three-week run.

The Venice world premiere of “Thriller” in 3-D is being accompanied by a restored version of Jerry Kramer-directed “Making of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller'” documentary, shown in a theater for the first time. Plans for the reissue of this powerful piece, which includes Jackson family home movies, are also currently under wraps.

Maybe it's this ^

MICHAEL JACKSON SCREAM ALBUM SET FOR RELEASE ON SEPTEMBER 29 ON CD AND DIGITAL (AND ON OCTOBER 27 ON GLOW-IN-THE DARK VINYL)

NEW “BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR X DANGEROUS” MASH-UP PREMIERES EXCLUSIVELY VIA SHAZAM TODAY

FAN CELEBRATIONS TO BE HELD WORLDWIDE

On September 29, Epic/Legacy Recordings, in collaboration with The Estate of Michael Jackson, will release Michael Jackson SCREAM, a collection of 13 of his all-time most electrifying and danceable tracks including “Ghosts,” “Torture,” “Thriller,” and “Dirty Diana.” Additionally, SCREAM includes a newly created bonus track, “Blood on the Dance Floor X Dangerous,” a high-energy five-song mashup from the acclaimed remixer The White Panda who created a seamless new musical experience.

Starting today, fans will be able to access the “Blood on The Dance Floor X Dangerous” mash-up of “Blood on the Dance Floor,” “Dangerous,” “This Place Hotel,” “Leave Me Alone,” and “Is It Scary.” The mash-up by The White Panda premieres exclusively on Shazam where for the two hours between 7am-9am ET fans can Shazam any Michael Jackson song and unlock the newly imagined track.

The track will also be offered as an instant grat track when you pre-order SCREAM digitally and will be available on all streaming platforms.

The choice of tracks for SCREAM reflects The King of Pop’s affection for this time of the year and its themes of costumes and disguise, darkness and light, character transformations and surprise. The album will be available in two physical formats, CD and glow-in-dark vinyl (available October 27) each containing a poster unique to the format. Fittingly, the poster and cover art conceal the first ever AR (augmented reality) experience created for a Michael Jackson project.

Each track on SCREAM is remarkable in its own way. For example, “Dirty Diana,” was the fifth consecutive No. 1 song from the album Bad which shattered records for consecutive chart topping singles off a single album; “Thriller,” penned by Rod Temperton, was the seventh of an unprecedented seven Top 10 singles from Thriller, the biggest-selling album of all time; and the Top 5 hit “Scream” is the only duet between Michael Jackson and his sister Janet. Also included are fan favorites from The Jacksons’ albums – “Torture” and “This Place Hotel” (the first single to be written, composed, and arranged solely by Michael); and, making its first appearance on a Michael Jackson album, “Somebody’s Watching Me,” the international 1985 hit by Rockwell featuring an iconic hook sung by Michael.

SCREAM is available for iTunes pre-order now: https://MichaelJackson.lnk.to/SCREAM_itunes. SCREAM is also available for pre-order on CD: https://MichaelJackson.lnk.to/SCREAM_amazon and on collectible, glow-in-the-dark 2LP vinyl (which will be released on October 27): https://MichaelJackson.lnk.to/SCREAM_VINYL.

Why Michael Jackson Is Going to Be Even Bigger This Halloween

By Christopher Palmeri
and Lucas Shaw

Dancers lined the Atlantic City boardwalk last Halloween to re-create the famous steps from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video, while a DJ named Prashant taught Bollywood versions of the King of Pop’s moves at the Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle.

The executors of the late singer’s estate have caught on to what disc jockeys and party planners have long known, that “Thriller,” released 34 years ago, means Halloween fun for a lot of folks. And now they’re looking to grab a share of the estimated $8.4 billion Americans spend on costumes, candy, decorations and other items. After all, even Barack and Michelle Obama shimmied to the hit single at their final White House Halloween party.

On Sept. 29, Sony Corp. will release Scream, a compilation of 13 previously issued Jackson songs, such as “Thriller” and “Dangerous,” as well as a new, remixed version of “Blood on the Dance Floor” by the producer duo known as White Panda. Next month, CBS will air a new, hour-long animated spooky special in prime time. More videos and remixes are on the way.

“We’re planting the Halloween flag,” said John Branca, the Los Angeles attorney who serves as co-executor of the singer’s estate, along with former music industry executive John McClain. “Michael loved Halloween!”

There’s a lot of whimsy in the marketing. The album comes in glow-in-the-dark vinyl. A related poster and cover include an augmented reality Jackson experience. The TV show, “Michael Jackson’s Halloween,” features the voices of Alan Cumming, Lucy Liu and Jim Parsons. It follows a young couple who meet at a mysterious hotel on Halloween night. There are Jackson’s songs, of course, and an appearance by an animated version of the star, who died in 2009 at age 50. It’s designed, in part, to draw a younger generation to his music.

Branca and McClain have already made Jackson’s heirs a considerable chunk of change. “This is It,” a documentary about the singer’s preparations for his ill-fated 2009 tour, went on to be the highest-grossing concert movie of all time, with $261.8 million in worldwide sales, according to researcher BoxOfficeMojo.com. Last year, the estate sold Jackson’s half of the Sony/ATV music publishing business to Sony for $750 million.
Immagine
Some fans are sniping online that the “Scream” compilation -- with no new songs -- seems like nothing more than a money grab. With two albums of unreleased Jackson music already put out posthumously, Branca says there aren’t plans for more.
Even if the album doesn’t sell well, it could increase sales of the Jackson catalog, according to Geoff Mayfield, a Los Angeles-based music industry analyst.
“It’s possible the regular album will sell more than the new version,” he said.
Interest in the pop singer remains high. A 3-D version of Jackson’s 14-minute “Thriller” video screened at film festivals in Toronto and Venice, Italy, this year, and Branca is searching for the best way to distribute it in theaters. Another Jackson short film, the 40-minute “Ghosts,” released in 1996, could be updated for new audiences. And if the animated show is a hit, there could be more.
“You see Charlie Brown Christmas every year,” Branca said.

Review: London Scream Album Launch

September 27, 2017 • By Admin Team
The Scream album! If we’d have said that about a month ago, it would be non-existent. But like a ghoul in the night, it was sort of sprung on us. It’s due to land in stores this Friday (29th September) and on a surprisingly warm Tuesday evening in London last night, the album had its official launch event.

Tickets were limited and the way to get them? A good old fashioned email saying ‘PICK ME’. The Event was two parts. The first a cinema screening including Michael Jackson’s Ghosts and the second an After Party at Freemason’s Hall in Covent Garden.

On arrival, the whole exterior was covered in Scream artwork with Michael’s name above the main entrance. There was a red carpet stretched out the front for a touch of class.

Scream wristbands were allocated to the growing line and eventually we were let in, through the Scream covered lobby and in to the screen. The general filing in soon turned to excitement as in each seat pocket was a pair of 3D glasses…the only words you could hear were ‘Thriller 3D?’

What seemed like an age as people took there seats (come on people, the invite said 6:30pm!) Radio presenter and now MJ Launch go-to guy Kevin Hughes took to the stage to announce that the screening would include some of Michael’s short films, full length Ghosts and Thriller 3D….the cheer was deafening.

Finally, we began and the title of each video appeared on screen as if through a mist, followed below by songwriting credits. The order was:
•Dirty Diana
•Scream
•Leave Me Alone
•Torture
•Blood On The Dance Floor

There was a cheer when Blood on the Dance Floor titles came up, but a theatre wide groan as the Refugee Camp mix kicked in. When will they learn, it’s always been about the original! Torture had the most laughs especially due to the waxwork of Michael that candidly appears.

Then the moment we were all there for, GHOSTS!!! Seeing it on the big screen was so much better! I was taking in every detail, not that I haven’t watched this for two decades already, but I wanted to savour the experience. As expected, we were cheering Michael on when it came to 2Bad, one of his best routines ever! Taking a scan around the room, you could see there were people who had not seen Ghosts before and they were clearly impressed! That’s our Michael! – This is what it’s about and this is why Ghosts needs a public release on DVD, although I hear there are apparently issues with the Kingdom setup as to why they can’t.

Following the credits, the screen went blue instructing us to put on the 3D glasses, naturally we mimicked the beginning of 2000 Watts.. “You may now apply, you 3D glass-es….as we prepare to proceed.”

The disclaimer came on the screen followed by the ‘Michael Jackson’s Thriller’ which came floating out of the screen towards us. The short film looked incredible in 3D, it felt like you were watching it being filmed right in front of your eyes, Michael literally popped out the screen and the colour had been enhanced incredibly. What was also noticeable was that the audio had been changed. The Bass line was slightly funkier and more compressed and other elements of the instrumentation had been stripped out. It was different, but would have been better if they’d left the instrumentation alone as neither Michael or Rod are here to approve the change and we know Quincy is not in the picture with the Estate.

Then when you think it’s all over, at the end of the credits, the zombie’s eyes pop out of the screen as neon green. There was again, massive applause.

It was then on to the After Party at the Freemason’s Hall. I’ve always wanted to go in there to see the decor, so was really excited. The large outside was lit up red with huge over arching trees and another red carpet. Heading upstairs to the large function space, they’d really gone all out. There were Ghosts style masks in all the floral displays, drinks and food everywhere and Michael on LOUD! There were 10 times more people than were at the cinema, a few TV stars and lots of industry people. The mood started quite calm, but as the drinks flowed and the tunes got better and louder, people let go and enjoyed Michael’s music as they should, dancing, singing and smiling!

Having to leave around 11pm (it’s now or never guys) we grabbed our free Scream launch t-shirt and tote bag.

I know that Scream has once again been a divider for the fans, but every project is. For me, it was nice to be at a event with others who want to enjoy the music and the short films and leave the politics at the door. I made a lot of new friends at the party, some i’ve seen across the fan circuit but not had the chance to speak with before, others who recently discovered Michael and also got to catch up with fans I used to know from outside Michael’s hotel. All in all, a positive night all about Michael!

Right, he was the King of Pop and all that stuff, but Michael Jackson was a capital-A album artist through and through once Quincy Jones stepped in. It’s not patently absurd to imagine someone with an hour of free time wanting to hear “Beat It” alongside “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “The Way You Make Me Feel” instead of setting up “Human Nature” and “P.Y.T.”, but it’s hard to imagine someone craving this sequence enough times to pay for it in a fixed order rather than just taking to Spotify when the mood strikes. Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, and the glorious, bombastic, undervalued Dangerous are all fully realized masterworks of cutting-edge pop maximalism, while the singles off the lesser HIStory and Invincible are fairly up to the same par as the deep cuts surrounding. You’re not getting a new revelation about “Earth Song” or “You Rock My World” by saving them from their intended contexts.

So, of course, a Michael Jackson best-of sells, but it’s a misnomer. His bests are Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous. Few argue. There was just enough time in between these monuments for each to be events in themselves. Madonna’s Immaculate Collection is a blessed mixtape from the gods after boiling down mostly good records to the essentials, and she did learn to make essentials of her own shortly after. Jackson’s discography divvies up neatly on its own.

So when Scream was first brought to our attention in September, it was looking to follow This Is It and Xscape into his non-pantheon of outtakes digs that rarely rose to the occasion of lone buried classic “Love Never Felt So Good”, and it turned out to be even less essential: another compilation. However, this one’s got some teeth (and balls), as a “Halloween-themed” collection that usefully corrals the man’s darkest and spookiest fare into a pretty convincing and sonically fluid totality of its own. For one thing, just four of Scream’s 14 songs come from the aforementioned great albums, which leaves 10 songs that actually stand a chance of improving on their original home, and they actually do.

Partly, this is because non-solo Jackson tunes are wisely included: Rockwell’s 1984 hit “Somebody’s Watching Me” and two of the Jacksons’ best tunes are reconstituted betwixt “Thriller” and “Leave Me Alone” to give their minor-key menace a flow. The horn-y “Xscape”, first unveiled in 2014, is given a chance to shine in its Prince-circa-Come way, while overtaxed 2001 swan song Invincible gets its excellent bookends, “Unbreakable” and “Threatened”, subsumed into something greater (though it’s not clear what the former, a not-spooky-at-all Biggie duet, is doing here). It doesn’t take much to pry the famed Janet duet “Scream” from the jaws of HIStory’s mediocrity.

But the biggest surprise of all may be the two tracks from 1997’s completely ignored Blood on the Dance Floor remix/mixed bag, the proto-Lady Gaga theater of “Blood on the Dance Floor” and the nearly P.E.-discordant “Ghosts” injected with new life in such A-list company. The consistent click of the new jack-inspired funk rhythms and total lack of ballads really do add up to a decent Halloween party with a consistent feel and steely momentum. Absurd as the package and its very existence are, it’s not misbegotten; you can hear the function it serves and the holiday conceit makes it fairly possible to imagine someone picking it up at Wal-Mart at the last minute along with their candy and decorations rather than going to the trouble to sort out a playlist. The bar for this sort of cash-grab is low enough that Scream clears it rather easily. It is in fact a scream, and it makes a case to revisit Jackson’s lesser works even as it cherry-picks from them. That’s almost enough to recommend plunking down cash for it. Almost.

Essential Tracks: “Ghosts”, “Threatened”, and “Somebody’s Watching Me”

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: @MichaelJackson earns 30th charting album with "Scream" http://blbrd.cm/ssBUbD

20:50 - 13. Okt. 2017

— Michael Jackson, Scream – No. 33 — Michael Jackson scores his 30th charting album and 16th top 40 set with the new compilation Scream. The set, which was released on Oct. 6 through MJJ/Epic/Legacy, debuts with 14,000 units – 11,000 from traditional album sales. The set’s Halloween-inspired tracklist "reflects The King of Pop’s affection for this time of the year," according to a press release from Jackson’s record label, "and its themes of costumes and disguise, darkness and light, character transformations and surprise. It’s the perfect soundtrack for Halloween/October parties." The tunes on the album include familiar hits like the title track (with sister Janet Jackson), “Thriller” and the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Dirty Diana.” It also features songs by The Jacksons like “Torture” and “This Place Hotel,” as well as Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” (which features Jackson’s background vocals).

Hello MJFam!
We’ve got two bits of good news for you this week. The first is that the Estate has decided to add a new feature to MichaelJackson.com providing answers to some of the frequently asked questions that we receive. For example, many people have asked us how the Estate decided to create Scream and Michael Jackson’s Halloween.
Here is the answer:

The Scream album and the animated Halloween special were inspired by Michael's love of Halloween and animation as well as the public interest every October in Thriller. Michael Jackson’s Halloween and the Scream album are intended to serve as the first part of a slate of Halloween releases to take place in future years – we love the idea of Michael Jackson dominating Halloween!

Scream is meant to be a playlist that will return to streaming services each October and there may also be special collector vinyl and CD releases like this year’s glow in the dark vinyl that could include other content or surprises as well.

Similarly, Michael Jackson’s Halloween is intended as an annual release, like the animated Charlie Brown holiday specials, ultimately being broadcast in most countries around the world each year. Though while not intended to compete with the $100 million + budget animation theatrical films, the quality of this amination exceeds anything that’s on television. It is meant for family viewing and to attract new fans. As importantly, it offers an opportunity to hear Michael’s music in an entirely new way and to share one of Michael’s own guiding principles – believe in yourself and follow your dreams – in a fun and entertaining way. Just as in Ghosts, Michael plays many parts and appears in multiple disguises to help two millennials, Vincent and Victoria, both of whom are struggling with this very issue, including as a stylized, superhero version of himself that fits in this magical world. It is not meant to be a true representation of the actual person but rather a magical character that belongs in the world that has been created. We recommend watching the program with a great stereo and the volume turned up. It is also a showpiece to allow Hollywood film and TV directors and global merchandisers to experience how effectively Michael's music can be used to drive a story.

The Halloween take-over doesn’t stop there! We know everyone will enjoy the new short films, “Blood on the Dance Floor 2017” and “Blood on the Dance Floor X Dangerous” that feature Michael’s footage from his original short films in new and fresh ways. And next year, we intend to add a release of “Thriller 3D” or “Ghosts 3D” in movie theaters around the world as part of the annual celebration.

These projects, and others that may be added in subsequent years, when taken together will help introduce Michael to new generations of fans and help parents introduce Michael to their children. For example, we heard of a fan who played “Torture” for his wife which led to her wanting to hear more Michael and Jacksons music. While we are happy to know that fans are enjoying the album, anecdotes like this mean we are also finding new fans!
The initial batch of Q&As is now on the FAQs page where more will be added in the future. You can check it out: http://michaeljackson.com/michael-jackson-faq
Furthermore, we are ready to announce the winners of the Scream Pre-order contest!

Thank you SO much for participating in the Estate’s exclusive pre-order contest. We received hundreds of entries from Michael’s most dedicated fans, and we are thrilled to announce the winners of the contest, all of whom have already been notified.

NEW YORK (AP) - Here's a chance to trick or treat with the eyes and ears. Catch "Michael Jackson's Halloween," a for-all-ages animated special airing Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern on CBS.

It costumes Halloween as a life-affirming way to explore hopes and dreams.

"This is just for fun," summed up John Branca, one of the special's executive producers.

The story unfolds in a familiar Halloween setting: a haunted mansion. A couple of teens, Vincent and Victoria, are by chance drawn into this mysterious manor on Halloween night. There awaits adventure, discovery and, of course, music. (Happily, this property is under the spell of Michael Jackson.)

Vincent and Victoria are voiced by Lucas Till and Kiersey Clemons, with Christine Baranski, Alan Cumming, George Eads, Brad Garrett, Lucy Liu and Jim Parsons furnishing the voices for a whimsical array of supporting characters.

At issue is an evil force that aims to impose mindless conformity on everyone and to banish music from the world. Spoiler alert: This villainess, who in fact is named Conformity, will soundly lose the battle thanks to Vincent and Victoria and the rest of the opposition rallied by Jackson.

"Michael was a big kid who loved Halloween and loved animation, and, of course, his video 'Thriller' is the most popular music video of all time," said Branca, who is also co-executor of the Michael Jackson estate and whose close relationship with Jackson reaches back to his wedding in the late 1980s, when Jackson served as his best man. "We thought: Michael deserves to be part of Halloween."

In the special, he appears in many alternate forms: as the Man in the Moon, as a bat, a dancing jack-o'-lantern and a mad-scientist cat.

"We wanted to imbue the show with the legacy of Michael and the world he created, and the songs that mean so much to so many people," said Mark A.Z. Dippe, the show's director. "We wanted to tell a story that brought all that to life."

Vincent wants to be a deejay. Victoria dreams of being a dancer. Neither is getting much support from their elders. They feel discouraged. But once they arrive at 777 Jackson St., "the kids are taken on a spiritual journey," said Dippe, "and they gain the confidence to make the choice that is in their hearts. We used the idea of Michael's music helping guide people through that decision-making process."

Indeed, Jackson's music is woven through the entire hour, a soundscape played against its lush 3-D animation.

"We wanted a narrative piece that was guided by the music of Michael Jackson," Dippe said.

That being the case, Branca had a bit of guidance for those planning to enjoy "Michael Jackson's Halloween" and its sensory treats: "We encourage everyone to view it on a big-screen television if they have one," he said, "with the sound turned up!"

On the red carpet tonight with my MJ “Ghosts” partner in crime Travis Payne . We were both overwhelmed with emotions tonight watching ourselves and Michael’s dreams come to life on the big screen at Mann’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Thriller 3D was Michael’s dream and so was “Ghosts” being re released at Halloween. Both of those were realized tonight, thanks to Michael’s estate. I met Travis in 1996 when we filmed “Ghosts” and Ive loved him ever since. We looked at each other tonight and said, “Can you believe this?” Seeing “Ghosts” at Mann’s Chinese Theater was something we never dreamed possible. The last time I saw Travis was backstage at Michael’s memorial in 2009 and we said the same thing to each other...”Can you believe this?...” Its been a crazy ride. #michaeljackson

Three songs always boosted by Halloween return to prominence this week: Michael Jackson's Thriller (No.34, 9,444 sales), Ray Parker Jr's Ghostbusters (No.65, 5,406 sales) and Bobby 'Boris' Picket's Monster Mash (No.94, 3,744 sales). Thriller is also being helped by the current TV campaign for the latest Michael Jackson compilation, Scream, in which it features. Said campaign, and its release on fluorescent vinyl, also helps that album – which debuted and peaked four weeks ago at No.9 – to surge 99-19 (3,778 sales)

The “Blood on the Dance Floor 2017” short film brings two worlds together: Michael’s original short film, and the Michael Jackson ONE performance footage to create one seamless story. #BOTDF2017
